Periodontology is a field of dentistry relating to the treatment and prevention of the alveolar tissue (periodontium). That is, in diseases of both gums and bone tissue, it is the periodontist who comes to help.

Periodontium is a complex morpho-functional complex of tissues that makes up the supporting apparatus of a tooth. Periodontium includes: gingiva, alveolar bone, periodontal, tooth root cement (a microlayer covering the root).
